Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), located in Fort Myers, Florida, recently announced that it has received a gift of $350,000 from Watermark Communities, Inc. (WCI) for the construction of a new Green Building Demonstration and Learning Center on the FGCU Campus.

This gift, which has been matched by the State of Florida, completes the funding required to build the $1,000,000 center. In recognition of the gift, the new Center will be named the WCI Green Building Demonstration and Learning Center.
Plans are currently under development for the Center and a project architect should be selected by this fall. Ground breaking is scheduled for early 2002, with the opening of the Center coming a year later. The WCI Center will be part of a complex of green buildings that are being built near the main entrance to the University. This complex, which will also house the new Sugden Welcome Center, will be constructed using green building principles and techniques. It will feature examples of energy and water conservation, healthy indoor air quality, use of recycled materials, ecosystem conservation, universal design, hurricane protection, solar energy, fuel cell technology and rainwater harvesting.

The new WCI Green Building Demonstration and Learning Center will serve as the home of the (FGCU Green Building Project ), whose mission is to foster environmentally sustainable and healthy building, housing, and landscaping practices in Southwest Florida through demonstration projects and educational outreach programs. The Center will focus on green building as it relates to hot, humid climates, such as are found in South Florida and the Caribbean. As part of the educational outreach program, the project has already had over 100 local builders, contractors and architects go through a two-day Build Green and Profit Program. The Project is also a founding member of the Florida Green Building Inc. , which is currently developing statewide green building standards and certifications for Florida homes, commercial buildings, developments and communities.
