Mark Hopkins, Acting Co-President, Alliance to Save Energy
Mark Gabriel indicates that the 21st Century transformation of the aging electricity sector involves unleashing technical innovation to transform the aging electricity system into a smart interactive, electronically controlled system, fully capable of supporting a "digital society."
"With this transformed system, the electricity sector will be encouraged and able to invest in new, innovative technology that ensures operational effectiveness, minimizes impact on the environment, and supports the evolving needs of the U.S. economy and society," concludes Mr. Gabriel.
According to Albert Thumann, Executive Director of the Association of Energy Engineers, "The upgrade of the transmission grid and reducing transmission congestion will require time, planning and money. Businesses need to implement strategies today that ensure continuous operations. Distributed generation technologies such as cogeneration and on-site power are cost effective and minimize the risk of power outages. In addition, the utilization of energy efficient technologies, which are readily available today, decrease transmission congestion and offer businesses the opportunity to reduce operating costs."
Owners of buildings are now requiring structures that are sustainable and use the latest in efficient day- lighting, building systems and renewable energy technologies. Mr. Garforth's presentation explores how the United States building design practices compare to Global Best Practices in buildings and how "Green Buildings" give companies the edge in competing globally.
New York State leads the nation in innovative global warming and energy efficiency programs. Peter Smith's presentation will touch on the how and why of NYSERDA's energy efficiency programs, and also discusses the backbone of program deployment - research and development.
The nation desperately needs a Comprehensive National Energy Policy, which balances supply side and demand side issues. Mark Hopkins addresses the status of a Comprehensive National Energy Plan, what to expect and its impact on the future of U.S. energy security and growth.
