As part of Green MotorSport awareness campaign in 2005-6, Ross Curnow, Patron of Green MotorSport, was supplied with an electric scooter at Silverstone racing circuit to introduce zero emission technologies into the heart of the motor sport world! It is very exciting to introduce low carbon technologies and renewable powered equipment at this level of motor sport!
Ross is studying at the National College of Motor Sport at Silverstone circuit and currently getting ready for his next season in the 2006 Formula BMW UK Championship with Nexa Racing. Nexa Racing was awarded the 2005 Formula BMW UK Drivers’ Championship, having won the British Formula Ford Drivers’ Championship the previous year. This year Silverstone’s paddock once again contained the familiar sight of Nigel Mansell, who has been appointed as BMW’s ambassador for the Formula, and his presence is expected to draw even more media attention! The next two races are on 8-9 April at Brands Hatch. More information can be found on www.rosscurnow.com or www.greenmotorsport.com
Ross Curnow, the winner of the 2004 Formula BMW UK Rookie Championship, said
"I was given an electric scooter by Green MotorSport to use in and around the paddock of the Championship which I was competing in. This Championship is a supporting race to the British Touring Car Championship. I was impressed with the electric scooter as soon as I collected it from Green MotorSport’s HQ in Woking."
I jumped on it straight away, after some guidance from Gordon Foat of course, and after a brief introduction on how to turn it on/off and charge it, I took it for its first Curnow test ride!
I was immediately surprised by the speed of the scooter and how well it handled. The acceleration was rapid and its take off from a stationary start was very smooth and predictable. During the race season the electric scooter proved perfect around the pits and paddock due to its reliability, nippiness, comfort and ease of use. I just plugged the scooter in using a normal 3 pin plug when I needed to charge it. There was no messing about with fuel and oil, it was so simple. The batteries would easily last a day with the mileage that I needed to do. It was also very quiet so I got the hang of using the horn! The scooter attracted a lot of attention from spectators and teams, people asked questions and wondered how it worked and where I got it from.
The scooter was used a lot at the "British Grand Prix" at Silverstone. Many famous racing driver names from past and present asked me about the scooter and my involvement with electric technology. It seems to be catching people’s attention and raising many questions. Overall I think the electric scooter supplied by Green MotorSport was a great addition to the race team. Many people admired me as I nipped around at race meetings and events spreading awareness of new zero emission technologies. Gordon Foat of Green MotorSport has said that we may keep the electric scooter for another year so we can continue spreading and transferring the concepts of Green MotorSport.”
Green MotorSport and Scoot Electric UK are working on a renewable system in which solar panels are used to charge the electric scooters and further reduce emissions. The term ‘Power in the Pits’ was first mentioned by Green MotorSport in Global Challenges, a feature on CNN International News in 2005 which was transmitted to over 200 countries worldwide and also on international flights! More information concerning this feature can be found on the Green MotorSport DVD video obtainable from Gordon Foat or at www.greenmotorsport.com
Green MotorSport has also recently been receiving support from the United Nations Environment Program which shares information between regional networks concerning high quality renewable energy educational projects.
