The Prince of Wales today (23rd March 07) visited Woking, a leading Council for sustainable energy. The Prince walked around the streets meeting people and asked what they thought of the innovative energy projects in their town. This was a serious effort by Prince Charles to engage the public in a low carbon economy. The Prince of Wales said in his introductory remarks to Al Gore’s film An Inconvenient Truth that it is very important that we stop and think about the implications of this film and take the appropriate action. Gordon Foat of Future Energies, the spokesman on energy issues for the Local Agenda 21, had a few informal words with the Prince, congratulating him on his presentation and the Prince responded with his thanks.

The projects reviewed on the day in Woking by Prince Charles included:
The Woking Town Centre Combined Heat & Power System
Believed to be the first commercially operating energy station of its kind in the country.
The Albion Square Canopy

A state of the art structure consisting of three 20-meter high tubular steel masts and eleven 6 meter high secondary columns. The masts support a glass canopy from steel suspension cables. The glazed roof is made up of over 35,000 photovoltaic cells, laminated in 272 glass panels, which have a peak electrical output of 81 kilowatts.
The Woking Fuel Cell CHP project.

Woking’s pool in the park is the setting for a commercially operating fuel cell combined heat and power (CHP) system. The fuel cell is an initiative of Woking Borough Council, which through its joint venture services company, Thameswey Energy Ltd, aims to design, build, finance and operate small-scale CHP stations to provide energy services by private wire and distributed heating and cooling networks to institutional, commercial and residential customers.
The Hybrolights Project
One of Wokings latest initiatives to explore lighting technologies powered by renewable energy. The energy is harnessed by four solar panels and a wind turbine. Woking Borough Council was one of the first local authorities to provide private wire residential Combined Heat and Power and combined CHP and photovoltaic systems.
Brockhill - A photovoltaic first

Brockhill is an ‘extra-care’ sheltered housing scheme operated by Woking Borough Council for elderly residents. It boasts a large domestic solar PV installation that converts daylight into electricity.
These projects in Woking will inspire local authorities throughout the country and the world to change to energy saving and renewable technologies.
